João Amorim ended his football career at the age of 32, after four seasons with Leixões SC. The full-back will, however, remain with the club from Mar, now as assistant coach of the first team.
Besides Leixões, Amorim represented Freamunde, Cova da Piedade, Varzim, Arouca, CD Aves, Belenenses, Ac. Viseu, and V. Guimarães, totaling around 300 matches in his career.
"Today I say goodbye to football as a player. It all started when I was 10 years old, a long road to this day, in the youth training camp at Ribeirão. I can't describe that moment in words. It was there that the joy of playing football became real. I completed my training at V. Guimarães, where I learned many of the values I hold dear today, a club that influenced me and allowed me to debut for the Portuguese youth national teams," the player wrote on social media.
He then continued: "It was a tough road, with many serious injuries that hampered my career. I fought tooth and nail for my dreams. However, due to these injuries, I wasn't able to reach the level I perhaps could have reached. However, I'm proud of my journey and know that I did everything I could to be better every day. So, for the sake of my knees and because I have a long life ahead of me, I decided to make this decision and follow a different path. To all the clubs I've played for, thank you very much for everything. To all the teammates and coaches I've worked with throughout my career, thank you. To everyone involved in the clubs I've played for, thank you."
